The Potbelleez

The Potbelleez

We spoke to vocalist Ilan Kidron about working with models and the new album.

Can you tell us about your new album?
It's going to be self titled - called The Potbellez - and out in September. There'll be 12-14 tracks on there. We're written pretty much all of it and we're in the studio producing it. Each song is written in really different ways - we don't have a formula that we stick to. I'll write a song and present it to the guys, or sometimes the guys will present me with a backing track, and we'll just develop it. We're all involved in each other's music. Expect big thumping club tunes along with some hair tingling anthems.

Are you all night owls because of the job?
No, we see a lot of days. The thing is with us, and we're lucky with this - we're a Friday, Saturday, Sunday band. People don't come to see us on Tuesday nights so we have quiet nights with friends or whatever and we have the rest of the week to work on our music.

Is it weird hearing your music on TV?
Yes, it's really weird. Especially on a show like Big Brother [laughs]. But we're lucky enough to be involved - and have an outlet for our music - with television because it's hard enough to get on there in the first place. But it's weird to hear my five year old singing it.

What have been the highlights so far?
We Love Sounds, in Perth. What we did was insane. We have a crazy time every weekend. New Year's Eve just past was a highlight. We hired a plane with all our friends on it and just partied for three days [after opening Channel Ten's live New Year's Eve broadcast to which two million viewers tuned in]. It was absolutely insane. And the shows are just getting better and better, we keep developing and the kids can see that. We have an absolute ball.

Do you miss your old life before you were famous?
Lucky for me and all the guys - we don't really get hassled about anything. The thing we learned quickly is that you shouldn't be in a hurry to make new friendships when you've got such beautifully close ones anyway. It's a real blessing to have such a big audience to play to. But no, I don't miss my old life.

What sort of shows do you enjoy the most?
Big festivals, because the kids are prepared to really lose it. But there's something about a big outdoor festival that makes you feel like a movie star. I love playing small gigs as well so it depends on the night. We've got the fifth anniversary of Moulin Nights [at the Moulin Rouge, Kings Cross] coming up in August, which is going to be huge.
