Backstage beauty

Smoky eyes and ruby lips were strong at Fashion Week, while soft browns and nudes kept a feminine touch...

It's not just the threads that keep things up-to-the-minute on the catwalk. Hair and beauty are also vital in creating the spring/summer looks you'll be wearing next. We ducked behind the black curtains to get the lowdown on what's hot.

Fashion week sponsor MAC Cosmetics had its team working on a record 42 shows, including Lee Matthews and Daniel Avakian. Senior artist Nicola Burford says the Lee Matthews show aims for "pure and beautiful".

"We applied Select cover concealer on the skin, only where necessary, and added a little face and body foundation to even out the skin tone. Plus, Lilicent cream blush to give a gentle warmth to the apple of the cheeks. The eyes carried a wash of cream colour base root, applied with a fluffy brush around the eyelid and lower eye muscle. Lips were stained with a new fall colour lipstick in 'Rapturous', applied heavier in the centre of the lip."

Australian brand ModelCo partnered with new label Hotel Bondi Swim. Make-up director Sam Correy says the looks were as luxe as the label. "Each was a look you would see at Bondi: chic and sophisticated, yet capturing the laidback beach lifestyle." Products used included ModelCo's Glow Summer Bronze powder, the eye-shadow and lip gloss palette Bow Couture, teeth-whitener-and-lipstick-in-one Star Smile, and the four-in-one wonder product Body Meringue, which incorporates an instant bronzer, shimmer, gradual tanner and anti-cellulite cream. Nice.

Napoleon Perdis was also responsible for the face paint at shows including Silence is Golden, Bec & Bridge, Alex Perry, Thurley and Illionaire.

Follicles were in focus at the frockfest, too. Brad Ngata for hair care brand KMS California was behind the glossy locks at the Antipodium, Jessie Hill and TAFE NSW's Fashion Design Studio shows. On Jessie Hill, Ngata says the brief was '90s power hair. "We created a slicked side to suggest an undercut, with a cascading fall of soft deep waved curls." KMS California products, such as Hot Spiral Spray, were used.

Hair and beauty for spring/summer? Sorted.
