Good value pub food caused a quiet revolution in the '90s. Knowing that a decent meal could pull in the punters and keep them hanging around for more drinks, publicans started turning out dishes that would keep locals away from Chinese takeaways.

Fifteen years ago we had the $5 steak. Today, the gastro-pub scene has taken off to such an extent that the food is often the biggest drawcard. Take the Four in Hand in Paddington or the Three Weeds in Rozelle for example - both these pubs have won awards for their restaurant-standard grub.

Since its revamp in 2004 The White Horse in Surry Hills has set itself above the nearby competition. The Foresters is famed for its steaks and the Clock turns out decent food on its upstairs balcony. But The White Horse has a new weapon - chef Will Adinkwuye's new $8 lunch menu.

predicable entry but are probably one of the most popular entries. The rump steak has upgraded to a generous 200g and comes with 'jus', not goopy gravy, to splash over the mash.

Wild rocket and jus? It's all a bit posh really, I think to myself, as I wash down my salt and pepper squid with lime mayonnaise with a glass of 2006 Matahiwi Sauvignon Blanc, while reading a poster for the upcoming jazz and piano night at my table next to a funky gas fire.

The veggies are abundant and crisp, the meat tender and well cooked, and the menu doesn't get ahead of itself (after all, we are in a pub). And for $8, it's all excellent quality. Even better, you can preorder through the website (www.thewhitehorse.com.au) so your food is waiting for you when you arrive.
