Live entertainment at small intimate venues is a rare treat these days but a few clever movers in Sydney are shaking up the bar scene with some aural indulgence.

Sitting under the Coca Cola sign in Kings Cross, the newly opened Piano Room is cocktail lounge meets cabaret club with a resident pianist and guest artists.

The sophisticated decor - black marble, gold and black lacquer walls and plush turquoise carpets - is opulent and eclectic (check out the borderline bad taste leopard mannequins and the gorgeous deep lounge chairs upholstered in deep jade green). Through the big windows, you can look down on the traffic running up and down William Street, but inside it's anything but pedestrian.

Smart table service delivers a good wine list (a bottle of Ruffino Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico from Tuscany provided a smooth accompaniment to the double bass and jazz singing) and a fine selection of classic and contemporary cocktails (try the Aida: a thirst-quenching "ode to... read on below advertisement

ancient love" in the form of mint, cucumber, apple with Circoc vodka, Tanq 10 gin and apple tea).

The food - in bar-size servings on lounge tables - was interesting; a crisp pork belly with apple sauce, baby herbs with scallop roe salt and nibbles, such as roasted paprika almonds.

The Wagyu beef was prime-cut but the sauce chien was over-powering for the delicate flavour and the lime mayonnaise a touch rich for the chipotle-spiced squid. A cheese plate with lavosh and muscatels sufficed, washed down with an excellent tempranillo from Tumbarumba.

The rich vanilla mascarpone with biscotti and a glass of ice wine from New Zealand was a rich ending to an decadent experience.

The Cross is fast becoming Sydney's smoothest, sexiest place for casual dining or for some sophisticated drinks with friends or a date. The Piano Bar is no exception.
